Dental crowns and bridges are artificial prosthesis or caps which try to mimic the shape and colour of the natural teeth in best possible way. They are fixed devices that are cemented onto the existing teeth or implants. Removable dentures can be removed from the mouth by the patient but they at times cause social embarrassment and are made up of acrylic which takes its toll on adjacent teeth and gums, leading to swelling of the gums and mobility of the teeth. Crowns and bridges in other words are fixed teeth and can only be removed by a dentist.

The purpose of a dental crown is to cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. They can also be used to improve the alignment, shape or even appearance of any tooth. However, the primary purpose of the dental crowns is to strengthen the damaged teeth and to make them look as good as new. A crown is placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function of chewing.

The purpose of dental bridges is to bridge the gap between teeth. A bridge is made by joining two or more crowns. Bridges are recommended for one or more missing teeth. They are cemented to the implants or teeth surrounding the empty space.
